Pumpkinhead is Already Back on Tap?!

Seriously....how is it already Fall time?!

Change is definitely in the air.  The mornings are colder, I see millions of pictures of kiddos being sent off to their first day of school on my Facebook, and I'm starting to see millions of ideas for Halloween and Thanksgiving pop up on my Pinterest!

And I think to myself....where the hell did our summer go? If you missed it, you can check out what we did on our "summer vacation" here.  But then I remembered.....it rained a lot of our summer here, so that's probably contributing to why it's kind of crazy that Fall is already here!

A huge kicker for me?  When I was a kiddo myself, we would always go blackberry picking the last days of summer right before school started again.....and lookie there.....the blackberries are out full force.  *sigh*

I've started pulling out my yarn in piles, and looking at patterns to make legwarmers and sweaters for Princess, and new sets of hats and mittens for both the kiddos.  Shipyard Pumpkinhead is back on tap at the restaurant that I work at, the acorns are dropping, I've started thinking about Halloween costumes, and it's constantly in the back of my mind that the kiddos birthdays are only around 2 months away..... *sigh*

Maine Fall foliage is amazzzzzzing!!
This is NOT what pumpking carving looks like at our house.....
It's definitely more like THIS.......
Dude, Halloween 2011
Our Halloween last year......
our house caught on fire that day (SERIOUSLY!), hence why my kiddos look like ragamuffins and I have a somewhat crazed look in my eye.....

Dude is going to be starting Headstart in a few weeks....as in: going to a center for two half days a week....I am plagued with whether or not I need to go "school shopping."  And even though I know that I don't really have to do this....I find it hard to pass up walking through the aisles full of crayons, folders, and "box top" items.

Speaking of "box tops".....I seriously need to figure that business out before Dude actually gets into Kindergarten I think.

The last, and biggest sign that Fall is here?  Seeing signs for the county fair that will be coming in a couple of weeks.  This is the craziness that means that it's truly Fall!  The fair is always a big deal around here!  We all love going, and S and I make sure that we get to go by ourselves at least once (except for the year that I was pregnant with Princess....because really, what fun is going to the fair without going on rides?)  The last few years Dude has loved seeing the animals, the maple syrup shack, and last year he got to go on lots of rides!  Princess loved seeing all of the animals last year too and S is so excited to take Dude to the Demolition Derby this year!

S and Dude on the merry-go-round 2011....
because I couldn't even go on THAT ride while I was pregnant!  But S loved taking Dude on it :D

Fair 2011....yes I'm wicked pregnant in this picture!
Princess last year....
basically looking at me like "You are CRAZY mama if you think I'm touching that sheep!!"

Am I so ridiculously excited that Fall is here?  Of course!  I love Fall holidays, baking more, knitting all the time, planning birthday parties, sitting in front of the fireplace with S, sweaters, and scarves.....
BUT I am NOT excited to be cold, to have to get a fire going in the fireplace every morning, to shovel snow, etc etc.......
I'll stop talking about it now.......

Did We Just Have a Summer Vacation?

WHAT just happened???

I don't know if it's because the kiddos are older, and it's easier to do different activities with them and all together as a family......or if it's because Dude will be starting Headstart in a few weeks......

But I'm pretty sure that we just experienced a "Summer Vacation."

Every summer since we've moved here, of course we've had fun, gone places, etc.....our first summer, S and I took off randomly one weekend with Dude and spent the weekend on the coast!  And then there was the summer that we flew to Kentucky to spend the week with Ss parents, sister, and grandmother!

Boothbay Harbor

2 babies went with us to Kentucky <3

But there was just something different about this summer!  Maybe it was because the school supplies kept catching my eye?  Maybe it was that I kind of had to stop myself from crying frequently with the thought of Dude going to Headstart?  Even though I don't have to buy school supplies, or prepare lunches, etc......the whole "school" thing is really hitting me hard, so I guess it would seem appropriate that I feel like we just had summer vacation.  There were so many activities, playing outside, going places, and so many plans made, that this summer FLEW BY!

Of course the kiddos got to spend some (lots of) time with my parents!  There were also many weekends that my brother and his family came up to visit, so the kiddos got to have lots of playtime with their cousins, and do all of the things that are involved with hanging out with Grams and Grampa!  Collecting eggs, 4-wheeler rides, and arts and crafts with Grams!

There were quite a few weeks where it was rididculously hot up here!  Yes, it can get hot in Maine!  And believe it or not, this house that we're in now, is the first house that we've lived in up here where we had access to a hose!  Crazy, I know.  The kiddos definitely got introduced to playing in the hose, and drinking from it!  Funny stuff!

There was so much playing outside with their 4-wheeler, their buckets, shovels, etc, that there is no way that I could show you all of them, but I love this picture!

This summer we started a new tradition as a family, where we all go out to breakfast together, usually Sunday morning, but sometimes Saturday!  This is something that S and I love, and I'm pretty sure that the kiddos love it too!  They get to talk to and see lots of different people (we always go to the same place), they love the owners, and they get to color and play and eat pancakes!

There were many, many, days and afternoons that S took Dude out fishing!  This is something that they love to do together and I love getting some quiet time with Princess!  So, Princess and I would do things those afternoons, whether it was watching General Hospital together or going to the beach!

We planted a huge garden in our backyard this summer!  Of course in the long run, our "Victory Garden" wasn't so victorious, but we had so much fun planting it, watering it, and now they love picking the green beans and eating them out in the yard in the sunshine.

These two play hard.....this was actually a common sight this summer!  This particular picture was taken after they had spent the night camping on the island.....

The kiddos and I also did quite a few activities through out Community Concepts program!  One day we went on a "Book Walk" on some local walking trails.  We would walk the trails while the kiddos kept their eyes open for the next page of the story, then collect pictures from the book so that they would be able to tell the story with their pictures when the walk was over!  The kiddos had so much fun!
And of course since it's summer time, the playground at the local elementary school is open all the time to the public.  Dude's been to this playground before, but the last time Princess went, she was still in the stroller.....they both loved it!  Of course Princess tried to copy everything that Dude did!

We definitely spent some time at the local beach when S would get home from work.  Princess didn't really like being in the water, and always had to be near S!!

And of course there was this good time/fiasco!!  We went to the Boston Aquarium, mostly so S could see his first child for the first time in 3 years.  But we (meaning me, S, and our kiddos) all had an awesome time!

Especially once we finally got away from the awkwardness and got to play in this craziness!!!

And we all did lots of relaxing at the end of the day!

And then, there was this....you know, S and I got married!!  There was so much planning, and craziness involved, but we had an absolutely amazing wedding!

And I bet you thought that was the end of our summer didn't you?  NOPE!  Just recently, my mom and nana took the kiddos school shopping!  Yes I know, it's funny, but the kiddos got to spend some time away from us, and WE got to go shopping by ourselves too!  We got so much stuff, and got to have a quiet lunch with lots of cuddling!
The next day, S and I took the kiddos on a picnic and went blackberrying!  The kiddos have had doctors appointments, dentist appointments, we've bought new crayons and different crafty things.  Their tans are perfect, Dudes hair is quite blond.  There have been so many laughs, good times, pictures, activities, and family outings!
In my opinion, what an awesome summer vacation!

The Skunk Situation

Ahhhhhhh rural America, where skunks can, and most likely will, get into your trash at some point.

Lucky for S and I, skunks have managed to get into our trash at all three of our residences in the past 3 1/2 years that we've lived in Maine.

Needless to say we're pretty much done with skunks.

Because I'm not talking about cute, cuddly, baby skunks that you would seriously consider having as a pet if it got descented,

or the amorous Pepe LePeu who would only try to hump your leg if you stumbled upon him......

No no no, I'm talking about a huge, scraggly skunk that managed to get into our garage and rip into 5 bags of garbage that we had in there.  So awesome.

this is nowhere near the size of our skunk.....
THIS is how big our skunk is, I'm not exaggerating....

Since the beginning of summer, we've have a mysterious guest who will show up and make a mess in our yard if a bag of garbage is forgotten about on our side porch.  Well, that's our own fault, I know.  But it still got pretty frustrating.  We thought maybe it was one of our neighbors dogs, and that would've sucked.

A few weeks ago, while I was out on the front porch at night having a cigarrette, I heard the strangest noise....the only way that I can vaguely, accurately describe it was that it sounded like a cat yowling, but it was low pitched and it was almost jerky...like that cat was low-pitched yowling as it was running down the road.  Can you imagine a sound like that?  I wouldn't blame you if you couldn't, it really is the most horrible description.  Anyways, I freaked out a little and went back inside.  I'm a scaredy-cat.

A month or so before that....the same scenario, I was outside at night by myself, and definitely looked down and saw a freaking huge skunk at my feet.  It took a lot of willpower to not scream.  The fat thing waddled off on it's own while I was frozen in place.  Like it was a T-Rex or something and wouldn't see me if I didn't move.

Am I afraid of skunks?  No.  But I would be stupid if I wasn't afraid of getting sprayed and dying outside while S tried to find all of the tomato soups that we have in the house.

Last week, S went into the garage, and found alllllll 5 of the bags of garbage we had in there ripped open and nasty smelly trash all over the garbage.  We also had the garbage can that we have outside, tipped over and the garbage bag in there had been ripped into also.  It was so awesome spending time on a Saturday morning bonding with S while we cleaned up trash together.

We figured out it probably wasn't a dog getting into our garage since none of the doors had been left open.  I thought maybe a raccoon....we were both pretty mad.  "Fuming" would be a more accurate descripton.

The next night, you guessed it, I was out having a cigarrette (seriously, I don't really smoke that much) when I could hear whatever f**ker it was, getting into our garbage IN OUR GARAGE!!!!  I could hear this thing rustling around in our bags of cans.....I stopped breathing to make sure that I had heard right...I heard it again!  I ran inside and got S, who promptly shot up, got his gun, and stealthily headed for the garage.   He tried shining the light from his gun into the window of the garage to try and see what it was...no luck.  We both manned up and I lifted the garage door as S aimed his gun just in case the critter made a run for it.

Nothing happened.

We bravely poked the bags of cans, S pointed his light....and there it was.  This huge ass scraggly white tail.  We ran.  We went back to make sure.  Yup.  Huge ass skunk.  Great

We hemmed and hawwed, talked about shooting it.....S said "not a good idea", since it would probably spray, and we definitely didn't want that to happen since our garage is right next the house....mainly the kitchen and the kiddos room.  No good.  We closed the garage door back up and went to bed.

Since then, we have borrowed a Havahart trap from one of my cousins and set it up in the garage.  It's been one night.  No luck yet.
We've used them before, they're pretty handy.....

But apparently the fat f**ker managed to tip over the garbage can in our driveway again and get into that trash bag.....instead of the nice tasty trash bag that S had put near the Havahart trap in the garage to tempt the skunk.  I got to clean up that trash this morning, because S didn't see it before he went to work (he parks on the other side of the house).

I'm not feeling quite so generous anymore about keeping the skunk alive.

But we will.  Don't worry

Who doesn't love picking up nasty, smelly trash in the early morning dew while you're still wearing your pajamas?

On another note, while I was searching Pinterest for pictures of skunks to put into this blog, this came up:

WTF??  Ladies, if you think for even a second that this is a good costume, sexy even, you need to seriously reconsider.  This is not sexy.  Nobody likes a skunk whore.  Just sayin.
